Sneaky Ways to Get More Walking In

The 10,000 steps a day rule is a bit weak in the scientific department, but science does prove that the more steps you can fit into your day the better your health.  In this car driving desk sitting society we are currently in it may seem hard to get in 10,000 steps much less go above and beyond that number.  But if you are sneaky with your steps you can achieve the 10,000 steps and soar above and beyond without much change to your current lifestyle. Life is busy, but with these sneaky walking tips you can increase your steps and improve your health.

Pace: Whether you are on the phone or waiting in the doctor’s office pace while you wait/chat. You will be amazed how many steps you can increase with just one phone call.

Take an extra trip around the perimeter of the grocery store before checking out. This is a twofer; you add steps and can use this time to make sure you have got everything on your list before checking out.

March in place while you are brushing your teeth. You may notice your pedometer is light on your steps goal, marching in place while brushing your teeth will get you that much closer or even too it.

Walk to the store. Only need a few things at the store, why not walk there instead of driving or taking mass transit.  You add the steps in and get to scope out the neighborhood.

Take an after dinner stroll with the family.  Why not get the whole family involved and let your dinner digest while on a walk before you face a sink full of dirt dishes.

Take an afternoon walk.  2pm and you are ready for a nap. Get up and outside, go for just a walk or stroll to a coffee shop a bit further than your usual one.

Set up a few walking meetings.  Steve Jobs did most of his meeting while walking, walking helps to increase the communication and understanding between the two people and helps you get in some extra steps that you wouldn’t get just sitting in a conference room.

When running errands park in the middle of a few if they are close enough and walk. Walk to the dry cleaner, then back to the car to drop off your clothes before heading the other way to pick up a gift for your child’s birthday.

Wear a pedometer or fitness tracker to help you keep track of your steps.  Set a goal and try to reach that goal everyday.  Having to be accountable even to a machine helps to keep you focused on getting in as much walking as you can.

Sneaking even one of these ideas into your daily routine and you will notice that not only are you increasing your steps, but feeling better.  And if you can add friends or family into a few of these you are not only increasing your own health, but that of the people you love the most.
