Craig TRX Whether you are trying to find a personal trainer to take your workout routine to the next level or just to jump-start you into working out, you need to make sure you find the right trainer for you.

Finding a personal trainer is little bit like dating, you set up a date, you worry about what clothes to wear, and you get a little nervous as you open the door worried they just won’t understand or get you., and just like dating you may have to try out a few trainers before you find “the one”.

Like dating their no one can really tell you exactly how to find the perfect trainer, but here are a few things to keep in mind when on your first “date” with a new trainer.

  • Patience- Everyone works out differently and you need a trainer who is going to understand your ways.  Maybe you are person who wants a drill sergeant to push you harder than you would do on your own.  Maybe you haven’t put on a pair of sneakers in years and just need to someone to guide in the beginning of your journey to a healthy and active body, without any shouting please.  A good trainer will also understand that you may miss a session or fall of the diet wagon or just get low on the whole process.  Working with you to get back on the wagon or just through the tough spells is part of the job.
  • Communication- Being able to explain a certain exercises over the phone, or verbally is an important skill any trainer should have.  Of course they should have the skill to show you the move when you are with them, but what if you are on the road and you need a bit of advice on some moves you can do in the hotel or even the airport.  And on a basic level of communication you should feel safe talking to your trainer about any concerns about your workouts or diet
  • Education –Any trainer you use or interview should be able to show proof of their education and have on hand a fitness certification proving to their clients they have passed the necessary classes to pass along their great fitness knowledge
  • Personality- Much like dating this is one of those things that you can’t tell people what to look for.  You know who you are and you know whom you get along with, and you should get along with your trainer.  Are they going to be your best friend? Probably not, but you should feel like you can talk to them as if they are your workout BFF or significant other. If you don’t feel comfortable with your trainer you are not enjoy working out, and that is going to make it that much harder to motivate yourself to workout
  • Don’t Rush—You didn’t marry the person you went on your first date with did you? The same concept should go into picking a trainer.  Don’t just stick to the first trainer you call if you don’t feel 100% they are perfect for you.  It is ok to try out a few trainers, you owe it to yourself to find one that may not be perfect, but is perfect for you.  Just like finding a person to go with your through life, you have to pick the person who brings out your best.  Your trainer should bring out the best healthy and active person that you can be.

Remember you owe it to yourself to find a personal trainer that not only knows their stuff, but that will work with your personality and get you to be the best you can be.  Don’t short change yourself with a personal trainer that you are not comfortable with, don’t enjoy spending time with, or that you questions their knowledge.  Spend the time and find the perfect trainer for you, you wouldn’t settle in your real life and you shouldn’t settle in your workout life.
