Fall Rule #1: Don't Drink Your Calories
Tuesday was the first day of Fall, which now means you can enjoy a nice warm (or iced) Pumpkin Spiced Latte, a pumpkin beer, or even some warm apple cider and those are just a few of the yummy fall beverages that make an appearance this time of year. Have you heard of a Hot Apple Pie Cocktail?
But before you run out and guzzle as much pumpkin flavored drinks or even apple cider remember that all those yummy drinks come with one huge downside, EMPTY CALORIES!!!
While it is tempting to sip on apple and pumpkin flavored drink treats while talking about how healthy pumpkin or apples are for you, while true in their raw form, not so true when mixed with large amounts of sugar and whipped cream. That is even assuming that what you are sipping is truly made from real pumpkin or apple and not some chemically engineered source. You have heard it over and over “Don’t drink your calories.” and if you haven’t, welcome back from your time off the grid and don’t drink your calories.
Here are some of this seasons favorite drinks and their calorie content. Along with the nutritional information is a rough calculation as to how many burpees you would have to do to burn that many calories. If you are dying to know where the burbee number came from the formula will be at the end of the article.
Starbuck’s Pumpkin Spice Latte: Grande 16oz, w/2% milk and Whipped Cream.
Calories: 380 Calories from Fat 120
Sugars: 49g
Burpees: 190
Calories: 117
Sugars 27.03g
Burpees: 58.5
Samuel Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale: 1 bottle 12oz
Calories: 199
Sugars: 0
Total Carbohydrate 19g
Burpees: 99.5
There are many more that could be listed, but that would only get even more depressing. Trying to lose weight or maintain weight is always hard, but it can be harder if you are sabotaging yourself by drinking calories. You should be drinking water (0 burpees), and when that gets boring a little green tea (unsweetened, 0-1 burpee) or black coffee (also unsweetened, I burpee).
All that being said it is Fall and one of the best parts of it being Fall is enjoying all the things you can’t eat or drink during the rest of the year. Do you have to totally exclude these things from your diet? No of course not, but use them a special occasion treat and if you feel that occasional treat becoming pretty regular stand in line thinking of all the burpees you would have to do to burn the calories you are going to drink. Is it worth it? Why not walk home and use that crazy thing called Google and find yourself some healthy alternative recipes for your favorite fall drink and make it at home. All of the yum less of the calorie regret or burpee work.
Where the heck did you get all those burpees?
Based on a 155lb person burning 10 calories per minute of burpees, and that same person could do 5 burpees per minute leaving each burpee the burning capability of 2k per burpee.
